Comanches are horse people, and the horse is a part of our culture and tradition.
My father was Comanche, and when my parents divorced, my mother remarried a man who moved our family to Wyoming. My stepfather taught me everything I know about horses and my horses taught me lessons that gave me the confidence to be strong in life. As a kid, we would pack into the mountains for weeks at a time, do relay races, barrel races and trail rides.
All things begin with an idea and bravely following a road of courage. I told stories to a friend about what it was like growing up in Wyoming, and he told me to draw them. Those stories are reflected in my art, which I try to capture the symbolic nature of the memory: how a horse moves; how a rider connects with the horse; and how this Comanche looks at the natural world. I delve into a place in my heart where there are no words - just symbolic color and form - in which I can share with others.
Having an allergy to most paints, I developed a technique in which I can use a pencil, add color with Photoshop (and other apps) which can then be printed on acrylic. This process allows for creative color placement and vibrancy to the finished product. While it has some aspects of the studio (or flat or traditional) style of painting, it goes beyond that with a more of an abstract application.
I am a mother, grandmother, writer, and singer songwriter working as a tribal attorney, tribal law professor and tribal judge. Aho.
